Because non-profit organizations are complex, managing a non-profit can be a challenge. Fortunately, there is a wealth of resources that can help your organization achieve its mission. Below are some web-based resources that provide excellent information about non-profit financial management.

The Internal Revenue Service provides information about starting and running a non-profit organization including helpful information about the annual Form 990 and the tax on unrelated business income.

The State of Washington posts a publication with information about the personal property tax exemption for non-profit organizations as well as the exemption on B&O tax for periodic fund-raising activities.

Idealist.org is a great site to list volunteer and paid job opportunities. It also hosts a wide range of FAQs that cover all aspects of managing a non-profit organization.

The National Center for Charitable Statistics, based in Washington DC, posts a sample chart of accounts designed to coordinate with other standard reporting formats including the IRS Form 990. Several file formats are available including a QuickBooks compatible file.

Intuit QuickBooks provides user-forums on a broad range of topics including questions specifically about non-profit use of the QuickBooks accounting software. You can post your QuickBooks questions and receive responses from other QuickBooks users.
